- Rod gap arresters: It is one of the simplest types of lighting arresters. The rod and lightning arrester consists of two rod electrodes, which are connected to the line and to the earth. When High Voltage Surge occurs, then the gap between the lightning arrester sparks over the surge current and then it is drained to the earth. This type of lighting arrester is mainly used as a backup protection with the main type of arresters.
- Expulsion type lightning arrester: This lightning arrester consists of an extinguishing chamber with an air gap. This extinguishing chamber is filled of fiber tube which interrupts within the arc. Whenever High Voltage Surge occurs, then the expansion type lightning arrester sparks over the series of gap and the gap in the fiber tube is discharged over. And then the current is flowed to the ground.
- Valve type lightning arrester: This type of arrester is usually consists of an outer ceramic body which contains a set of resistances or walls and Spark gaps in the series. The valves are made up of a special Silicon carbide ceramic. - Metal oxide lightning arrester: The metal oxide lightning arrester consists of a series of metal oxide varistor blocks. These acts like a voltage controller switch. When the voltage over the arrester increases then the metal oxide varistor starts to conduct and excessive of the energy is drained to the ground. This process is continued until and unless the system attains the normal voltage.
